Overview
Sion is one of those tanks that the enemy team cannot just ignore. His passive alone makes him terrifying to fight — when he dies he comes back as an unstoppable zombie that can still kill people if they do not run. His Q charge-up knock-up is one of the most impactful hard CC abilities in the game when it lands, and his W shield stacking mechanic means he gets tankier every single game just by being in lane and farming. The thing about Sion is that he rewards patience and positioning more than mechanics. His engage is slow and telegraphed but when it connects it completely changes a teamfight. He is the kind of champion that turns a boring split push into a global pressure tool and turns a losing teamfight into a winning one just by showing up and absorbing damage that would kill anyone else.
Strengths
- Passive Glory in Death makes him impossible to simply kill — he comes back as a zombie and can still deal damage or disrupt
- W shield stacks permanently through the game making him progressively tankier the longer the game goes
- Q knockup is one of the longest hard CC abilities in the game and completely changes teamfight dynamics when it lands
- Excellent waveclear with Q and W lets him control the pace of the lane and rotate freely
- Ultimate Unstoppable Onslaught can travel across the map to make plays in other lanes or engage fights from unexpected angles
Weaknesses
- Q charge is long and telegraphed — experienced players can side step it easily if they see it coming
- Very easy to kite for mobile champions who can simply walk away from his slow movement speed
- Lower damage output than bruisers means he relies entirely on his team to follow up his engage
- Ultimate is hard to hit at close range and can be avoided by enemies who hear it coming
- Falls behind significantly if he loses early farm since his W scaling is crucial for late game tankiness
Early Game
Sion early game is straightforward — farm safely, stack W, and look for Q opportunities when the enemy overextends. You do not need to win the lane, you just need to not lose it badly while building your passive W stacks. Every time you fully charge W in lane you permanently increase your health, which compounds massively over a full game. Against aggressive lane bullies play under tower and use Q to last hit from safety. When the enemy steps up too far throw out a Q charge — even if they dodge it the threat changes their behavior. Look for your ultimate to roam only when you have a clear path and a lane that is vulnerable.
Mid Game
Mid game Sion becomes a genuine threat with his engage and split push pressure. His ultimate travels so far that he can make plays from almost anywhere on the map — pushing top lane then using Unstoppable Onslaught to crash into a dragon fight is a legitimate strategy. In teamfights look for Q setups from unexpected angles, ideally flanking through the jungle rather than walking straight at the enemy. A flank Q that hits multiple enemies simultaneously is one of the most impactful single plays any tank can make. Keep stacking W whenever you are in lane and do not waste time farming empty waves when your team needs you for objectives.
Late Game
Late game Sion is a nightmare to deal with for the enemy team. His W stacks have made him an enormous health pool and his passive means killing him is almost counterproductive — he can still run down carries even as a zombie. In teamfights your job is to absorb as much damage as possible, land Q on multiple targets, and enable your carries to deal damage safely. Use ultimate to engage from long range or to catch enemies who are fleeing. Remember that your passive is a win condition in certain scenarios — running a zombie Sion into the enemy team while your actual team flanks can completely split the enemy's attention.
Tips & Tricks
- Always fully charge Q before releasing — a partially charged Q deals much less damage and knockup duration.
- Stack W every single time you are in lane, even when the full charge is not needed for a trade — those permanent health stacks add up to hundreds of bonus HP by late game.
- Use ultimate to set up Q — the collision from Unstoppable Onslaught stuns enemies briefly, giving you time to immediately channel Q for a follow-up knockup.
- In your passive form prioritize running at the enemy carry rather than retreating — zombie Sion can still win fights if used aggressively.
- Place yourself between enemies and your carries in teamfights — your massive health pool means you can absorb damage that would instantly kill your backline.
