Overview

Rengar is a predator, not a fighter. His entire kit is built around one thing: finding an isolated target, jumping on them before they can react, and deleting them in under a second. When played well he is one of the most terrifying champions in the game — a fed Rengar with his ultimate up means the enemy ADC is essentially playing on borrowed time every time they step away from their team. The ferocity system is what gives him his burst window. Stacking ferocity fast and spending it on empowered abilities is the difference between a Rengar that chunks someone and a Rengar that one-shots them before they see him coming. He is high risk high reward in the truest sense — one bad fight or one bad gank path and he falls so far behind he becomes irrelevant.

Strengths

  • One of the highest burst damage ceilings in the game on isolated targets
  • Ultimate allows completely invisible approach which is nearly impossible to react to
  • Ferocity system lets him chain empowered abilities for devastating all-in combos
  • Excellent at punishing overextended and isolated targets anywhere on the map
  • Strong duelist in the jungle when he has ferocity stacked and items online

Weaknesses

  • Falls off very hard if he cannot get early kills — a behind Rengar cannot burst anyone and becomes useless
  • Requires excellent vision control to set up kills safely without getting collapsed on
  • Struggles in full teamfights where he cannot isolate a target and gets CC'd before doing anything
  • Armor items hard counter his burst damage — Bramble Vest and similar items drastically reduce his effectiveness
  • High mechanical requirement for ferocity stacking and combo execution under pressure

Early Game

Rengar's early game is about stacking ferocity efficiently while looking for first blood opportunities on overextended laners. His clear speed is solid and his dueling in the jungle is strong when he has ferocity ready. The key early decision is whether to invade or play safe — Rengar can invade most junglers at level 3 if he has ferocity stacked, but getting caught on the wrong side of the map is a death. Look for ganks on laners who are pushed up or have no escape abilities. Do not force fights in the open where the enemy can collapse on you — always gank from a bush if possible to proc your passive leap.

Mid Game

Mid game is Rengar's prime hunting season. With one or two items his burst becomes lethal and his ultimate lets him cross the entire map invisibly to pick off targets. This is when you want to use your ultimate to find picks in side lanes or river, then immediately rotate to an objective. Vision control becomes critical here — place control wards in key bushes and deny enemy vision so they cannot see you coming. The enemy team will start playing around Rengar's ultimate once they respect it, so use that to your advantage by threatening one side while your team takes something on the other.

Late Game

Late game Rengar is a high stakes gamble. If the enemy has grouped well and has vision coverage, hunting them becomes extremely difficult. The key is patience — wait for someone to slip away from the group, then unleash your full combo before they can call for help. Do not use your ultimate in a full 5v5 teamfight because you will just get CC'd and die without doing anything meaningful. Instead, look for the carry who stepped too far, use ultimate to approach invisibly, and one-shot them before the fight begins. One successful pick can swing an entire teamfight in your team's favor.

Tips & Tricks

  • Stack ferocity to 4 before engaging so your first ability in the fight is empowered — this is the difference between a kill and a failed all-in.
  • Always leap from a bush when possible — your passive gives you a free empowered ability on the first hit from brush.
  • Use empowered E in your combo to slow the target so they cannot run while you finish the kill.
  • Track the enemy ADC's position constantly when your ultimate is up — they are your primary target.
  • Place a control ward in the bush you plan to leap from before using ultimate to prevent enemies from denying your passive.
