Overview
Kog'Maw is the definition of a hyper carry — he does almost nothing for the first fifteen minutes of the game and then proceeds to melt the entire enemy team from range if left unchecked. His W Bio-Arcane Barrage is one of the most broken sustained damage abilities in the game, shredding percent maximum health from any target including the tankiest frontliners. The thing about Kog'Maw is that he is a glass cannon in the most extreme sense. He has no dash, no escape, no crowd control, and very little self-peel. He is entirely dependent on his team to keep him alive long enough to do his job. In the right composition with a peel-heavy support and a frontline that does not die, he is genuinely one of the highest damage champions in the game. In the wrong composition he is free food for any assassin or engage support who gets within range.
Strengths
- Bio-Arcane Barrage W shreds percent maximum health which makes him effective against every champion including tanks
- Massive attack speed scaling means his DPS increases exponentially as the fight goes longer
- Extended range from W means he can deal damage from further away than almost any other ADC
- Void Ooze E slows enemies which provides some self-peel in emergencies
- Living Artillery R gives him global poke and execute potential on low health targets from anywhere on the map
Weaknesses
- Absolutely no mobility — no dash, no blink, no escape tool of any kind means getting caught is almost always a death
- Completely reliant on team peel and frontline — without protection he dies before dealing meaningful damage
- Very weak early game before W levels — he cannot trade effectively and is easy to bully in lane
- Extremely vulnerable to assassins and engage supports who can reach him before his team can react
- Needs multiple items to reach his damage ceiling — the early and mid game power spikes of other ADCs make him feel weak before his build is complete
Early Game
Kog'Maw early game is genuinely one of the weakest in the entire ADC role. Without W active he has shorter range than most ADCs and his trading pattern is limited to auto attacks and Q slow. The goal is not to win lane — it is to survive it with as much gold as possible. Farm safely, stay behind your support, and do not try to all-in unless you are heavily ahead. Against aggressive lane combinations like Draven and Thresh, play extra passively and accept that you will lose some CS rather than dying trying to contest. W at level one gives you better poke range than your base auto attacks — use this to apply some pressure in lane but do not overextend. Every death you take early is lost gold that delays your power spike significantly.
Mid Game
Mid game Kog'Maw with one or two items starts to show what he can do. W Bio-Arcane Barrage at this stage begins dealing noticeable percent health damage which makes even tanks start to feel uncomfortable. The key positioning principle is to always stay at maximum W range — you want to be far enough that melee assassins cannot instantly jump on you but close enough that your W empowered auto attacks are in range. In teamfights let your frontline engage first, wait for the enemy to commit their gap closers and CC, then activate W and start dealing sustained damage from range. Do not activate W before the fight starts — save it for when enemies are actually in range and cannot escape easily.
Late Game
Late game Kog'Maw with full build is one of the scariest damage dealers in the entire game. His W shreds percent health from tanks and his attack speed is so high that he is essentially a machine gun. In teamfights your positioning is everything — stay at maximum range behind your frontline and just keep auto attacking whatever is closest to you while W is active. Do not try to chase kills or move into dangerous positions, even if it means missing a kill. One death from Kog'Maw usually costs more than the kill is worth because you lose your sustained damage from the fight entirely. Use R Living Artillery between fights to poke and execute low health enemies from across the map.
Tips & Tricks
- W Bio-Arcane Barrage has a short duration — activate it only when enemies are in range and you can actually deal damage, not preemptively.
- Q Caustic Spittle reduces armor and magic resistance — use it at the start of every trade to amplify all subsequent damage.
- E Void Ooze slows in a line — use it to create distance between yourself and a diving assassin or to slow fleeing targets.
- Living Artillery R mana cost increases with each consecutive cast — do not spam it or you will run out of mana very quickly.
- Build with a strong support composition in mind — Kog'Maw works best with supports like Lulu, Janna, or Thresh who can protect him rather than aggressive engage supports.
