Braum does not win fights by dealing damage — he wins them by making it impossible for the enemy to reach the person they are trying to kill.

Overview

Braum is one of the most dedicated defensive supports in League of Legends, built entirely around the concept of protecting a single ally through physical interception, passive application, and reactive crowd control. His passive, Concussive Blows, applies a stack to any enemy hit by Braum or his allies after he uses an ability — at four stacks, the target is stunned for a duration, creating a crowd control chain that requires teammate participation but deals significant lockdown when executed. His W, Stand Behind Me, leaps to an ally and grants both of them bonus armor and magic resistance, making him one of the few supports who can immediately boost a threatened ally's defenses by physically jumping to them. His E, Unbreakable, creates a directional shield that blocks all projectiles coming from the direction Braum is facing and reduces the first instance of damage from non-projectile sources as well. This shield is one of the most powerful defensive tools in the game in the right matchup — a well-timed Unbreakable can completely nullify an Ezreal ultimate, a Caitlyn headshot, a Jinx rocket, or any other projectile ability that would otherwise secure a kill on the ally Braum is protecting. His ultimate, Glacial Fissure, knocks up all enemies in a line and leaves a slowing field that makes escape or follow-up difficult. Braum's strength is entirely dependent on the threats he is facing — against projectile-heavy compositions, he is one of the most oppressively defensive supports in the game; against melee threats or area damage, his shield provides less value.

Strengths

  • Unbreakable is one of the most powerful anti-projectile tools in the game — a well-timed cast completely nullifies entire ability ultimates and auto attacks from projectile-based ADCs, making Braum uniquely strong against marksman-heavy compositions
  • Guardian and Stand Behind Me together create immediate defensive reinforcement that can be deployed in reaction to a threat — jumping to an attacked ally and activating Unbreakable simultaneously can prevent deaths that no other support could react to quickly enough
  • Concussive Blows passive creates a stun that activates through ally auto attacks, meaning Braum's crowd control is not dependent on landing skillshots but instead rewards his team for attacking the same target he tags
  • Glacial Fissure provides a knock-up and slowing zone that is excellent for disrupting enemy engage attempts and making retreat from a fight extremely difficult for the enemy team
  • W's instant leap to any nearby ally provides emergency peel that does not require Braum to be adjacent to his carry before the threat arrives — he can jump directly to a threatened ally from a distance and immediately begin blocking incoming damage

Weaknesses

  • Unbreakable only blocks projectiles coming from the direction Braum is facing — melee threats, area damage, and abilities that deal damage from behind or above completely bypass the shield, making him significantly weaker against non-projectile compositions
  • Concussive Blows requires ally participation to proc the stun — in a solo gank situation or when his team is not attacking the tagged target, the passive stacks cannot be applied quickly and the crowd control window is lost
  • Less explosive than engage supports — Braum is a reactive champion who responds to enemy aggression rather than creating it, which means in matchups where the enemy support can start fights faster than he can respond, he often loses the lane initiative
  • W leap range requires allies to already be relatively close — the ability can fail to reach an ally who is being chased from far away, and its short cooldown does not compensate for the limited range in situations where the ally is already far out of position
  • If the enemy team drafts non-projectile damage dealers or heavy area damage, Unbreakable's value is dramatically reduced and Braum becomes a slower, less explosive version of a tank support without the unique defensive tool that makes him worth picking

Early Game

Braum's early game is built around two things: applying Concussive Blows passive to set up kills with his ADC, and using Unbreakable to negate the most dangerous abilities the enemy bot lane throws at his carry. The passive application pattern starts when Braum uses any ability on an enemy — after that, the next several auto attacks from Braum or any ally apply stacks, and at four stacks the target is stunned. The most effective early game pattern is to use Q to poke the enemy support or ADC, then immediately follow up with auto attacks while signaling your ADC to also attack the same target. If your ADC lands even two auto attacks on the tagged enemy, the stun activates and creates an all-in opportunity. Use W to jump to your ADC when they are being focused, then immediately activate Unbreakable to block the projectiles that are already heading toward them — the combination of increased resistances from W and the projectile block from E can completely absorb an aggressive all-in attempt. The most important early game habit is reading when the enemy is about to throw their key ability — a Caitlyn headshot, a Jinx rocket, or a Jinx ultimate — and preemptively activating Unbreakable a moment before it arrives rather than reactively after it has already hit.

Mid Game

Mid game is where Braum's defensive value scales significantly beyond the bot lane and begins affecting the entire map. Around Dragon and Rift Herald fights, his Unbreakable becomes one of the most impactful abilities in any fight that involves projectile-based damage from enemy ADCs or mid laners. The positioning priority during this phase is to always be between the highest incoming threat and your highest value ally. Before Dragon fights, identify which enemy champion deals the most projectile damage — the enemy ADC, a Jinx, an Ezreal, a Xerath, or any champion with projectile ultimates — and position yourself on the side of your ADC or mid laner that faces that threat. When the fight starts, watch for the moment that champion is about to cast their most dangerous ability, activate Unbreakable to absorb it, and use W and your passive to follow up with crowd control that creates free damage windows for your team. Your ultimate is excellent for disrupting the enemy team's frontline at the start of a fight or for stopping a chase when your team needs to disengage.

Late Game

Late game is where Braum's Unbreakable reaches its maximum value and where his positioning decisions become the most consequential. In full five-on-five teamfights, Braum's role is almost always the same: identify the highest damage projectile threat, stand between that threat and your highest value carry, and time Unbreakable to absorb the critical damage at the right moment. The most important late game habit is pre-positioning before fights start. If you know the enemy ADC is on a specific side, you should already be on the side of your ADC that faces them before the fight starts — not scrambling to reposition after the damage is already incoming. Glacial Fissure can be used either offensively at the start of a fight to disrupt the enemy team's formation and knock up anyone who is rushing forward, or defensively to create a slowing zone between your team and enemies who are chasing your retreating teammates. Do not waste your ultimate on single targets who are already in your team's reach — save it for the moment where the knock-up and slow zone will affect the maximum number of enemies or create the most decisive disruption. Between fights, stay close to your ADC and use W reactively to jump to them whenever a diver or assassin bypasses your frontline.

Tips & Tricks

  • Unbreakable must be activated before the projectile reaches you to block it — it does not retroactively block damage that has already hit. Learn to read enemy cast animations so you can activate it just before the ability fires rather than after the damage lands.
  • The passive combo is most effective when your ADC is already auto attacking the tagged target — communicate your Q targets to your ADC before you use the ability so they can immediately follow up rather than reacting after the fact.
  • W jumps to allies, not enemies — use it to immediately reach a threatened ally when they are being dived or focused, not as an engage tool to close distance on the enemy. Jumping to a carry and activating Unbreakable simultaneously is one of Braum's highest value defensive plays.
  • Glacial Fissure can be used backward — aim it behind your team at enemies who are chasing a retreat rather than forward into the enemy team. A well-placed fissure that slows the entire enemy pursuit can save more lives than a fissure aimed into the enemy frontline that only hits tanks.
  • Your defensive value is highest when you are facing the direction threats are coming from — position yourself so that Unbreakable covers the most dangerous angle, and rotate your facing direction to track the highest priority projectile threat throughout the fight rather than focusing on one direction the entire time.
