Overview
Alistar is one of the most iconic engage supports in League of Legends, known for his devastating W+Q combo that can instantly displace an enemy carry from safety into your team. His kit is built around creating chaos — he headbutts enemies into walls or teammates, knocks up everyone nearby, then laughs off burst damage with his ultimate. Despite his simple-looking kit, Alistar rewards game sense heavily. Knowing when to roam, when to engage, and when to stay back and peel is what separates a great Alistar from an average one. He is especially strong in compositions that want to play around picks and aggressive early game pressure.
Strengths
- W+Q combo is one of the most reliable and punishing engage tools in the game, instantly removing a target from safety
- Extremely durable when ultimate is active — can survive enormous amounts of burst and focus fire
- Strong roaming potential allows him to influence all three lanes, not just bot lane
- Dual role flexibility — can both hard engage on the enemy backline and peel aggressively for allied carries depending on the situation
- One of the best champions at protecting carries against mobile assassins thanks to his knockup and headbutt
Weaknesses
- Missing the W+Q combo leaves Alistar nearly helpless — both abilities go on cooldown and the enemy can punish freely
- Almost no ranged poke or pressure, making some lane matchups very passive and difficult to win
- Heavily reliant on finding the right engage windows — a mistimed combo can throw a fight entirely
- Struggles against compositions with heavy disengage tools like Janna or Gragas who can simply cancel his engage
- Less effective when his team has no follow-up damage — crowd control alone cannot win fights without teammates acting on it
Early Game
Alistar's early game is deceptively strong but requires patience. In lane, you want to wait for the enemy to step too close or overcommit, then punish them with your W+Q combo. The combo is: W (headbutt) an enemy into your tower range or into a wall, immediately follow up with Q (Pulverize) to knock them up before they land. This combo deals surprising damage, especially combined with ignite and your ADC's burst. Do not throw your combo randomly — once W and Q are on cooldown, you have very little to offer for the next several seconds. Between combos, focus on body blocking for your ADC and zoning the enemy with your presence alone. Once you hit level 6, your roaming becomes very powerful. If your lane is stable, consider walking to mid lane to create a number advantage. A successful gank with your combo can easily result in a kill or summoner flash, turning the game in your team's favor.
Mid Game
Mid game is where Alistar becomes a genuine map control force. With Aftershock fully online and your combo available, you can single-handedly start and win skirmishes around Dragon, Rift Herald, and towers. Your goal during this phase is to be constantly active — either applying pressure in lane, roaming for picks, or setting up vision around objectives. Before every Dragon or Herald spawn, try to establish deep vision in the enemy jungle and look for an unexpected engage on an enemy champion who wanders too far. Your ultimate makes you nearly unkillable for several seconds, meaning you can often dive under enemy towers and survive. This is a powerful tool — but use it with purpose, not just to look cool. Communication with your team is critical at this stage. Your combo starts fights, but your teammates need to be ready to follow.
Late Game
Late game is the most demanding phase for Alistar because the stakes of every decision are at their highest. A single good engage can win the game; a single wasted combo can throw it. In full teamfights, you have two main approaches depending on your team composition. The first is to hard engage — Flash forward, W+Q the highest priority target (usually the enemy ADC or mid laner), and trust your team to follow up while your ultimate keeps you alive. The second is to play as a peeler — stay near your own carry, use your knockup and headbutt to interrupt anyone who tries to dive them, and keep your backline safe. Choosing between these two roles requires reading the fight as it develops. If your team is ahead and can easily clean up, engage aggressively. If the enemy has threats like Zed, Rengar, or Kha'Zix targeting your ADC, peel instead. One final tip for late game: do not waste your combo on minions or on champions who are not priorities. Every second Alistar spends on cooldown in a teamfight is a second the enemy team has a significant advantage.
Tips & Tricks
- The standard W+Q combo works by using W (Headbutt) first to displace an enemy, then immediately pressing Q (Pulverize) before they land — this knocks them up mid-air and chains the crowd control perfectly.
- You can also reverse the combo in some situations — Q first under an enemy to knock them up, then W them toward your tower or a wall while they are airborne. This is harder to land but very powerful.
- Activate your ultimate before taking burst damage in fights, not after. Once your health is already low, the damage reduction matters less. Use it proactively when you see the enemy about to unleash their combo.
- Roaming is one of Alistar's biggest advantages over other supports. After a successful lane trade or when the wave is pushed, walk to mid lane and look for a quick engage with your combo — it only takes a few seconds and can win the game.
- Learn to use Hextech Flashtraption to engage over walls. This opens engage angles that the enemy has no way to anticipate, creating free kills on mispositioned enemies near walls and objectives.
