Overview
Azir is one of the most mechanically demanding and rewarding champions in League of Legends, built around a unique system of sand soldiers that he summons and attacks through simultaneously. Unlike traditional mages who cast spells from their own position, Azir places soldiers at locations up to a certain range away and then commands them to attack anything nearby, allowing him to deal sustained magic damage from positions that would normally be completely safe. His Q sends soldiers dashing through enemies to a location, his W summons a soldier, and his E dashes through his own soldiers to reposition instantly. The combination of these abilities creates a champion with exceptional zone control — soldiers force enemies to either engage at a disadvantage or give up ground entirely, because simply standing near them is dangerous. His ultimate, Emperor's Divide, summons a wall of soldiers that pushes enemies backward and creates a barrier that blocks movement and projectiles, making it one of the most versatile ultimate abilities in the game — it can peel assassins off him, separate the enemy team, block escapes, or create a barrier that forces enemies to fight under worse conditions. Azir's power ceiling is among the highest in the game for players willing to invest the time to master his mechanics, but his floor is equally low for players who have not internalized the precise timing and positioning his kit demands.
Strengths
- Soldiers allow Azir to deal sustained magic damage from positions that most other damage dealers cannot safely reach, giving him a range and safety advantage that is nearly unmatched among mid lane mages
- Emperor's Divide is one of the most versatile ultimate abilities in the game — it can peel assassins, separate team compositions, block projectiles, interrupt Baron or Dragon steals, and create barriers that change the physical layout of fights
- Exceptional objective fight control because soldiers force enemies to approach through zones where Azir's damage is already dealing tick damage, making simple approach paths into dangerous corridors
- Q dash through soldiers creates unexpected repositioning angles that allow Azir to adjust his position mid-fight without Flash, giving him significantly more mobility than most stationary mages
- One of the highest damage ceilings in the late game when at full items and with Lethal Tempo fully stacking — a protected Azir dealing damage from range is capable of melting entire frontlines while remaining nearly untouchable
Weaknesses
- Extremely mechanically demanding — optimal soldier placement, Q dashes through soldiers, and precise ultimate timing all require hundreds of hours of practice before becoming consistent, making Azir one of the highest skill-floor champions in the entire game
- Heavily punished when behind — an Azir who loses his lane cannot exert the same zone control or damage threat, and unlike most mages, he cannot fall back on burst damage when his sustained output is insufficient
- Vulnerable to assassins who can gap close instantly — a Zed, Kha'Zix, or Rengar who reaches Azir before he can use Emperor's Divide to peel them often secures an easy kill because Azir's damage requires soldiers to be positioned correctly
- Mana hungry in the early game — placing soldiers and using abilities frequently drains Azir's mana pool quickly, forcing him to manage resources carefully or lose the ability to maintain the pressure that his zone control depends on
- Emperor's Divide has a long cooldown that makes it a high-stakes resource — using it defensively to peel an assassin is sometimes necessary, but it means giving up the ability to use it offensively for potentially game-changing plays
Early Game
Azir's early game is the most difficult phase for him because his damage is lower, his mana drains quickly, and he lacks the items needed to fully leverage his soldier system. The priority in the first several minutes is to farm as safely as possible by using soldiers to last hit minions from range, minimizing the auto attacks you take from the enemy laner. Place a soldier in the minion wave and use it to poke the enemy whenever they step forward to farm — this is the fundamental early game rhythm that builds small gold leads over time without taking unnecessary risks. Manage your mana carefully and avoid using spells unnecessarily, because running out of mana against an aggressive early game mid laner can lose you the lane entirely. Your ultimate in the early game is primarily a defensive tool — use it to prevent assassin dives and ganks rather than looking for flashy plays that risk your position. Once you hit level six, your ultimate threat and kill potential both increase, but resist the urge to immediately force aggressive plays. Continue farming, continue building your item lead, and wait for the mid game where your scaling begins to pay dividends.
Mid Game
Mid game is where Azir's value starts to become apparent on a map-wide scale. With one or two core items and Lethal Tempo building stacks more reliably in fights, his sustained damage output increases significantly and his zone control starts creating genuine problems for the enemy team around objectives. The most important mid game habit is to use soldiers to pre-control objective spaces before fights start — before Dragon or Rift Herald spawns, position soldiers in the approach path the enemy team must use to contest the objective. This forces them to either take damage walking into the contested zone or approach from a different angle that leaves them more exposed. During fights, maintain constant soldier placement while repositioning with your Q dashes — the goal is to always have soldiers between you and the enemy while still dealing damage. Emperor's Divide is a powerful mid game tool for separating the enemy team or blocking escape routes, but save it for the moment it will have maximum impact rather than using it reactively to every threat. Between fights, use your soldiers to push waves rapidly and apply side lane pressure that forces the enemy team to respond.
Late Game
Late game is where Azir transforms from a challenging champion to play into one of the most powerful forces on the map, provided his team can give him the protection he needs to deal damage from range. With full items and Lethal Tempo stacking to maximum in extended fights, his soldiers strike at a speed that is genuinely terrifying for enemies who try to stand in their range, and Emperor's Divide becomes one of the most impactful ultimate abilities in any teamfight. In five-on-five fights, never be at the front of your team. Position behind your engage support and tank, let them initiate, and begin placing soldiers into the fight the moment it starts. Your Q dashes let you adjust your angle and coverage without moving your actual position much, so use them to maximize the area your soldiers cover rather than to reposition dramatically. Save Emperor's Divide for the two moments where it matters most — either to peel an assassin who bypasses your frontline and reaches you, or to separate the enemy team at the moment when dividing them would make the fight unwinnable for them. A well-timed Emperor's Divide that splits the enemy five-on-five into a three-on-three and a two-on-five can single-handedly determine the outcome of the game's most important fight.
Tips & Tricks
- Soldier placement is the foundation of everything Azir does — always have a soldier in the location where you expect a fight to happen before the fight starts, not after. A soldier placed reactively after the enemy engages is almost always too late to have full impact.
- The Q dash through soldiers is not just a repositioning tool — it is also a gap closer and a finisher. Dashing through a soldier toward an enemy and following up with soldiers is one of Azir's highest burst combos, and dashing away through a soldier is one of his most reliable escape tools.
- Emperor's Divide is strongest when used preemptively to control space rather than reactively to escape. A wall placed in front of an approaching enemy team cuts off their advance before they have established their formation, whereas a wall placed after they have already engaged is harder to use optimally.
- Mana management is critical in the early game — use soldiers to last hit minions rather than auto attacking from close range, and only use your Q when it will either hit the enemy or provide a meaningful repositioning angle. Wasting mana on Q casts that accomplish nothing is one of the most common Azir mistakes.
- Track enemy assassin cooldowns in the late game — your Emperor's Divide peels assassins, but it has a long cooldown. If you use it defensively and it is on cooldown when the second assassin or diver arrives, you have no answer. Know which enemies are the biggest threats to your position and save Emperor's Divide specifically for the moment they commit to attacking you.
