Anivia does not chase kills — she forces enemies into her terms. Every wall placed, every blizzard dropped, is another second the enemy team spends dying in a zone they cannot leave.

Overview

Anivia is one of the most unique control mages in League of Legends, built around the concept of denying space rather than simply dealing damage. Her ultimate, Glacial Storm, creates a persistent blizzard that slows and damages everything inside it, and combined with her Crystallize wall, she can create situations where enemies have no safe ground to stand on. What makes Anivia difficult to play but extremely rewarding when mastered is the precision required to get the most out of her kit. Her Flash Frost needs to be aimed carefully to land the stun at the right moment, her wall placement can save or doom fights depending on how it is used, and her ultimate needs to be positioned to cover chokepoints rather than open areas. She is especially powerful in narrow spaces like the river, Dragon pit, and Baron pit, where her wall and blizzard can completely seal off escape routes. Her passive, Rebirth, gives her a second life as an egg — an enormous defensive tool that makes her one of the hardest champions to permanently kill in a single fight. In the right hands and the right composition, Anivia can make entire areas of the map unplayable for the enemy team.

Strengths

  • Glacial Storm combined with Crystallize creates zone denial that is nearly impossible to play through in narrow spaces like river, Dragon pit, and Baron pit — the enemy team is forced to either take damage or give up the objective entirely
  • Extremely high sustained damage output over time — while Anivia lacks the instant burst of assassins, enemies who stay inside her ultimate even for a few seconds take enormous amounts of damage
  • Rebirth passive gives Anivia a second life in every fight, forcing enemies to kill her twice and often causing them to burn abilities or waste time on the egg while the rest of the team recovers or fights back
  • One of the best waveclear champions in the game once her ultimate is available — she can clear entire minion waves almost instantly, preventing sieges and maintaining strong map pressure with no effort
  • Wall placement versatility allows Anivia to completely change the shape of a fight — blocking escape routes, splitting the enemy team, protecting allies from divers, or creating chokepoints that funnel enemies directly into her blizzard

Weaknesses

  • Completely immobile with no dashes or movement abilities — a single successful gank by the enemy jungler almost always results in a kill, and Anivia relies entirely on her team, summoner spells, and positioning to stay safe
  • Extremely mana hungry, especially in the early game when her ultimate is available — running out of mana while trying to hold a wave or zone an enemy in a fight is a common problem for Anivia players who do not manage their resources carefully
  • Her stun on Flash Frost requires the ability to travel to the enemy and then detonate at the right time — missing it in a gank or teamfight often means the enemy simply walks away from her blizzard and she has no way to stop them
  • Highly vulnerable to mobile champions who can dash in and out of her ultimate before it does meaningful damage — champions like Zed, Akali, Yasuo, and Sylas can engage on Anivia and disengage freely, negating her zone control entirely
  • Positioning mistakes are catastrophic — because Anivia has no escape, standing in the wrong place means dying before she can contribute anything to a fight, which is why she requires exceptional map awareness and warding discipline

Early Game

Anivia's early game is one of the most demanding phases for her because she has almost no tools to protect herself and her mana runs out quickly if she is not careful. The priority in the first few levels is to farm safely under tower if necessary, use your Q only when you have a high-confidence stun opportunity, and avoid extended trades where the enemy can simply poke you down without risk. Your passive, Rebirth, gives you a free life if the enemy does not have the damage to finish the egg — but do not rely on it, because most junglers will simply finish the egg if they gank you at level two or three. Start Tear of the Goddess as soon as possible to begin stacking mana, because Anivia's early mana pool is genuinely one of the worst in the game. Once you hit level six and unlock your ultimate, your lane threat dramatically increases — you can freeze the wave under the enemy tower, force them to take chip damage from your blizzard, and hold your Q to punish anyone who tries to engage you. At this point the enemy jungler should be very cautious about ganking you, because your ultimate combined with a Q stun can create enough time for your own jungler to countergank successfully.

Mid Game

Mid game is where Anivia truly comes into her own. With Manaflow Band stacked and your first core item complete, your damage output and mana sustain become dramatically better. The most important habit to develop during this phase is identifying chokepoints on the map and using them to your advantage. Before every Dragon or Rift Herald fight, try to position your team so that the enemy must approach through the river — a narrow corridor where your wall and blizzard together create an almost unpassable barrier. When a fight starts in this kind of area, drop your ultimate immediately to cover the ground between the two teams, use your wall to block the most likely escape route, and then use Flash Frost to stun the highest priority target who is standing in your blizzard. The combination of all three abilities in a tight space is genuinely one of the most oppressive zone control setups in the entire game. Between fights, use your ultimate to clear waves instantly and deny the enemy any tower damage, which forces them to respond to your side lane presence instead of grouping for objectives.

Late Game

Late game is where Anivia's zone control reaches its peak impact, but it is also where mistakes become the most costly. In full five-on-five teamfights around Baron or Elder Dragon, Anivia is one of the most impactful champions in the game if positioned correctly — but one misplaced wall or one badly timed Flash Frost can throw an otherwise winning fight. The fundamental rule for Anivia in late game teamfights is to never be the frontliner. Stay behind your tank and engage support, let them initiate, and then drop your ultimate on top of the grouped enemies after the fight has started and people have used their mobility abilities. Placing your ultimate after the initial engage means enemies are more likely to already be standing inside it when it activates, rather than dashing out before it starts dealing damage. Use Crystallize to split the enemy team or block the path between their frontline and your carries — a well-placed wall in the right moment can prevent an entire flank from reaching your backline. Save your Flash specifically for situations where you need to either escape a dive or reposition your ultimate to a more central location in the fight.

Tips & Tricks

  • Flash Frost detonates on your command — do not just fire it and let it explode on its own. Aim it past the enemy, then detonate it when it is directly on top of them for a guaranteed stun rather than hoping they walk into the explosion.
  • Crystallize is one of the most versatile abilities in the game, but it cuts both ways — a wall placed in the wrong position can trap your own allies or block your escape route just as easily as it can trap enemies. Think before you place it.
  • Your ultimate requires activation and deactivation — when you are not in a fight, turn it off immediately to preserve mana. Leaving it running while clearing waves costs significantly more mana than turning it off between casts.
  • When your passive triggers and you become an egg, stand still whenever possible. Moving the egg alerts enemies that it is the real Anivia and encourages them to finish it. A stationary egg is much harder to distinguish from a minion in the chaos of a teamfight.
  • The most impactful use of Crystallize is not trapping enemies in your ultimate — it is separating the enemy team in half during a fight. A wall placed between the enemy frontline and their carries forces the carries to either stay unprotected or walk around the wall, giving your team time to act.
