Overview

Zyra is a support that plays more like a mid lane mage than a traditional support — she deals real damage, zones hard, and can carry games by herself if the enemy team does not respect her plant spacing. Her entire kit revolves around placing seeds and then activating them with abilities to spawn plants that attack on their own. A well-placed Q through a bush that spawns two plants on top of the enemy bot lane is one of the most punishing things that can happen to any laner in the early game. Her ultimate is a massive AoE knock-up that can completely change the outcome of a teamfight, and her passive plants that spawn when she dies make killing her feel almost counterproductive sometimes. The weakness is that she is completely immobile — if an engage support like Leona or Nautilus gets on her before she can zone them out with plants she is dead.

Strengths

  • Plant spawning creates persistent zone control that punishes any enemy who walks into the area for several seconds after ability casts
  • Grasping Roots E is a reliable root that spawns plants on hit making it her most important poke and engage tool
  • Stranglethorns ultimate is a massive AoE knock-up that can flip teamfights completely when it hits multiple enemies
  • Deals real damage as a support — building AP items makes her plants and abilities hit for actual threatening numbers rather than tickle damage
  • Passive Briar Patch plants spawn when she dies which can punish enemies who kill her in a bad position

Weaknesses

  • Completely immobile with no dash or movement ability — getting engaged on by a Leona, Nautilus or Blitzcrank before plants are placed is usually a death
  • Plants are destroyed by enemy auto attacks which means a patient enemy who clears plants before walking in negates much of her zone control
  • Mana hungry early — spamming Q and E without managing mana leaves her unable to respond to engages later in the lane
  • Falls behind quickly if the enemy plays respectfully around her plants and does not give her free poke
  • Root E requires a direct hit to spawn plants and the projectile is not the fastest — skilled opponents can dodge it consistently

Early Game

Zyra early lane is about establishing poke dominance through intelligent seed and ability placement. The key habit is always placing a seed before throwing Q or E so the ability spawns a plant on hit rather than just dealing base damage. Two seeds placed in a bush before the enemy walks through it can chunk them for a third of their health before they even realize what happened. Against aggressive engage supports play a bit further back and use Q range to poke from safety — do not stand so far forward that Leona or Blitzcrank can lock you down before your plants respond. Mana management is critical early — do not spam abilities carelessly or you will be empty when you need to respond to an engage.

Mid Game

Mid game Zyra becomes a genuine zone control and teamfight threat. With AP items her plants start hitting for real damage and her Q poke in tight areas like river becomes very threatening. Before every dragon and baron fight place seeds in the pit and around the entrances — if a fight breaks out near objectives her plants give her enormous area denial that makes it very hard for enemies to walk through. In teamfights look for the angle where your E root hits multiple enemies at once, spawn plants on the rooted targets, and then use your ultimate for the knock-up when enemies are grouped. Always have seeds placed in advance of fights rather than trying to plant them during the chaos.

Late Game

Late game Zyra with full AP items is a genuine damage dealer that enemies cannot ignore. Her plants hit hard enough to be a real threat and her ultimate in a late game teamfight is one of the most impactful knock-ups available to any support. The key late game play is using her ultimate as an anti-engage tool — when the enemy team dives onto your backline use Stranglethorns to knock them all up and buy your carries time to deal damage or escape. Position at maximum range in teamfights and use your seed placement to deny flanking routes. If the enemy team tries to focus you remember that your passive plants spawn on your death which can punish anyone who kills you in a bad position.

Tips & Tricks

  • Always pre-place seeds before casting Q or E — an ability that hits a seeded area spawns a plant which dramatically increases your damage output compared to casting on an empty area.
  • Seeds placed in bushes are invisible to enemies without vision — use this to set up ambushes in river bushes before fights over objectives.
  • Grasping Roots E travels in a line and hits the first target — aim it at the feet of an enemy who is walking toward you rather than where they are standing.
  • Stranglethorns ultimate has a short delay before the knock-up — place it slightly ahead of moving enemies rather than directly on them so they walk into the knock-up.
  • Your plants have a brief aggro window when spawned — spawning them near the enemy carry in a teamfight causes them to auto attack the carry for free damage while you focus on positioning.
