Overview
Kled is one of the most unique champions in the game because he is literally two champions in one. He rides Skaarl, a giant lizard, and when he takes enough damage Skaarl runs away leaving Kled on foot — a terrifying little gremlin who fights even harder dismounted. The courage mechanic is what makes Kled special: when dismounted he can fight his way back to Skaarl by dealing damage and landing abilities, which gives him an effective second health bar in fights. His ultimate Chaaaaarge is one of the best engage abilities in the game — it gives his entire team a massive movement speed boost and a shield, making coordinated dives and teamfights extremely difficult to counter. Kled rewards aggression more than almost any other top laner and punishes passive play by simply running at people until they are dead.
Strengths
- Dual health bar mechanic makes him extremely hard to burst down — enemies need to kill him twice effectively
- Chaaaaarge ultimate gives team-wide movement speed and shield making it one of the best engage tools in the game
- Dismounted Kled is deceptively dangerous — players underestimate him and die trying to finish him off
- Extremely strong duelist in extended fights where he can manage his courage bar and remount Skaarl
- Bear Trap on a Rope Q creates a reliable long range tether that pulls enemies in and sets up guaranteed damage
Weaknesses
- Skaarl flees when dismounted which can look like Kled is running away — this can confuse teammates who do not understand the mechanic
- Falls behind significantly if he loses early duels since his kit is built entirely around winning fights not farming
- Very easy to kite when dismounted since he loses Skaarl's movement speed and becomes extremely slow
- Predictable engage pattern with ultimate — experienced teams can set up to counter his engage before he arrives
- Requires courage management knowledge — dismounted Kled who cannot remount quickly dies without contributing
Early Game
Kled early game is about establishing physical and psychological dominance in the lane from the very first minion wave. He is one of the strongest level 1 champions in the game with his Q tether and W Violent Tendencies proc giving him enormous burst damage in a short window. The key habit is to never back down from a trade — Kled's dual health bar means he can absorb more punishment than his health bar suggests, and dismounted Kled fighting back surprises most opponents who thought they had already won the trade. Look for short aggressive trades with Q hook into W proc, then back off to reset. Against ranged matchups play more carefully around minions but always be looking for opportunities to get on them with your E dash.
Mid Game
Mid game Kled becomes a genuine map presence with his ultimate. Chaaaaarge can travel across the entire map in a reasonable time and the movement speed it gives his team makes it one of the best tools for coordinated plays. This is the stage where you want to be active — split push to create pressure, then when your team needs to fight an objective use your ultimate to arrive with full speed and engage immediately. In skirmishes without ultimate available, rely on your Q tether to pull enemies into melee range and then activate W Violent Tendencies for the burst. Keep track of your courage bar — getting dismounted at the wrong moment in a fight can be punishing if you are not ready to fight back.
Late Game
Late game Kled is a strong frontliner and engage tool but is less of a carry than mid game. His ultimate remains one of the best teamfight initiation abilities in the game regardless of the stage. The key late game habit is using Chaaaaarge to engage when your team is in a winning position rather than as a desperation play. A well-timed ultimate that connects the full team onto the enemy backline can end the game instantly. In teamfights after the initial engage use Q to tether priority targets and then use W to deal burst damage. Manage your courage carefully late game since being dismounted with no courage in a 5v5 is very hard to recover from.
Tips & Tricks
- When dismounted always fight back — the courage mechanic rewards aggression and running away makes it harder to remount Skaarl.
- Q Bear Trap on a Rope tethers the enemy — do not use W immediately after Q, wait for the pull to connect first then activate W for the full burst combo.
- Chaaaaarge ultimate gives a shield to Kled and all allies following him — always ping your ultimate so teammates know to follow you into the engage.
- Skaarl's dismount threshold is based on a hidden courage stat — fighting aggressively when dismounted fills courage faster than staying passive.
- Against ranged champions use E Jousting to quickly close distance and proc your Q tether before they can react and reposition.
